That's up to you. Making a fursuit yourself is relatively cheaper than commissioning one if you are on a budget. You could commission an inexpensive fursuit builder but don't expect extremely high quality. Or you can save up for a more professional builder.

Hmmmm. I'm deciding on how to go about this basically now that I'm 100% into doing this. Is there some place to buy fur online, because I don't have anywhere nearby where I could possibly find white fur, orange, and brown fur.
On another note, Would it be a lot for a partial fursuit? I'm willing to buy a partial if anyone knows where I can commission a good quality one cheap. Cheap being around 200-300? It's pretty much all the cash I'm willing to spend.
Plenty, I'll send you a message listing them.
And that would depend on the design, what you want with it (LEDs, moving jaws, realistic or toony look, airbrushing, etc), and who you commission. From some I've talked to recently you could get a partial for under $300 (maybe even $250) but they go under the beginner/amateur category, and most others base prices for partial (and some heads) start at $300-500.

Thanks so much. I was having trouble getting my head around these prices. (sighs)
So expensive, yet so pretty! Anyways, thanks for the help!
I've seen the light up eyes, and boy do some impress! Clockwork creatures scares the shit out of me since I plan to do/try learning costume creation later in my life....
I like them on certain heads but it doesn't seem to look right on a lot of them. But I do give credit to everyone who makes them by hand. That I could never do.
You shouldn't be afraid to aim that high, you may actually be able to accomplish such a goal.
I think i'll try for light up eyes. Shite, this one guy used animatronics in his fox head so the eyes blink, the eyebrows move, and the mouth snarls. Can't imagine doing that.
Oh I know who you're talkign about Blue Fox Joe. My friend knows him, he inspired her to do the same for her suit. I'm just in awe with how innovative people can be!
Yeah, he has something pretty amazing going on. I'm gonna put my best work into my sisters head, getting a new scanner so I can send you a character ref, and saving money!
Have you met anyone who's fursuit totally rocked your socks off? I've been obsessed with how cute OMGSparky, and Kwik's Kendi are. Dancing is something I do often, so I find dancing fursuiters to be double awesome!
Oh yes Eddie-Ka on deviantart if first to cme to mind she's a fantastic artist! I love hos she take a character and give it her own flare, she made one of my friends' characters a troll. Just fantastic work and another is Beastcub also on da her craft is so unique you can spot them in a crowd of fursuiters and have such personality! Both are such a nice people, two things I really like seeing in folks.
I wish I could dance like half the fursuiters I see onine. My favorite is V and Monster Roo.
FFFFF. Holy shit more amazing dancing and videos. I'm loving the realistic fursuits Beastcub makes! It looks like some just walked out of really old sci-fi cover art!
Yea they were the first two I've seen when it came to dancing videos. =D Beastcub has a nice balance between realistic and stylized. I'm happy she's gotten so much recognition through media and everything.
Speaking of the media... i only recently saw the stolen Fenris head thing since it's a big deal. Now it's a furry internet witch hunt. Dumb, hilarious, and sad. Hope Fenris gets it back. She seems to be up there in AMAZING fursuit makers category.
Yea that's a heap of a mess. I want it solves ASAP so all of this can be put to rest. All the finger pointing isn't doing anyone any good it's stressing both Fen and the commissioner out so much I can't even imagine.
Yeah, someone should start a donation pool just in case fen and the buyer if they havent already? Is that even possible (I feel others would abuse a donation for this sort of thing?) I'm pretty sure this debacle is going to end in butthurt. Ugh. :(
She already spoke and said she wasn't going to do that if by chance the head does turn up.
Unfortunately I'm going to have to agree. Too much drama for it not to happen.
Well, it's not been gone long, and it's prolly someone she knows who has it. So hopefully it'll sort itself out...

Fursuits aren't as easy to build as they look. Especially if you want something that won't fall apart after a lot of wear. Make sure you check out tutorials for building and ask a lot of questions if you do.
I would recommend saving up and researching suitmakers and get a nice suit from a maker that can get it to look like you want your character to look. There are tons of talented builders out there.
Ahhh! I will. I'm saving more cash now so I can maybe get a full fursuit. My main concern was if I would get/make a partial, and It looks like I am. I'll put character ref up around the holidays. I have a good character sheet, but my scanners totally broken.

I have seen some builders make suits look exactly like the ref sheet given. I never cease to be impressed by some of the talent out there.
However if you end up wanting to make your own suit, more power to ya. Creativity should never be stifled.
Yeah! Actually, If i make a suit, the first one I'll make is for my sister. Thanks guys! I'll post some stuff way later on. Dealing with school an obtaining supplies is less than fun.
Have you been to any cons yet?
Ears and a tail are quick, easy, and cheap to make, and fun to wear. I had a blast going to my first con and just wearing ears and tail. If you're artsy with makeup you can have some fun with that too (or look for the occasional artist at cons that does it for pay).
Go to a con or two, make some furry friends, and establish a network of people who *will* approve of your newfound joy while you work on easing your current friends into the idea of what this furry thing is. Then you can take your time either finding the perfect fursuit maker and saving up for expenses, or studying up on techniques and acquiring materials to make your own, and eventually get on to having your own suit!
Yeah... I'm thinking this will turn into a summer project, and I'll start allocating materials this holiday season. I am planning to go to Anthrocon (since it's the only con nearby me), but I will try to make some friends outside there first so I maybe have someone to room with. I've roomed with friends at anime and comic conventions/meets, but I have no one in he furry fandom!
Honest, I'm gonna aim for a partial since I've had a long running set of characters.
Are there any smaller cons within the NY/PA area? All that I know of is Anthrocon.
Not sure! AC is the only one in that area I know of, I am from Chicago. It's supposed to be a pretty great con though, I'd like to try to go next year, even though it's a bit of a drive, I've got some furfriends in my area that like to go. Might not be able to get the time off though, so we'll see.
AC has a website with a forum where you can ask people for suggestions of other local cons, and also look for roommates when the time for that comes, and plenty of other info. http://www.anthrocon.org/
- They've already set the 2013 dates, so there should be plenty of activity on there to help you out.
Thanks. Will post about NY groups soon. Anthrocon where I plan to go. Gotta pay for it all myself tho, so I'm gonna save up.
